My Neato Frito Signature Courtesy of Joanne Hanson

People have been asking in my blog and emails where got my signature. I was reading blog posts yesterday and came across Joanne's post on how to do it.

You can go to www.mylivesignature.com to get yours! You can do many fonts, styles, angles, etc. You can also pay to have it animated which I didn't have time to do yesterday.

It is a pain to post because it is HTML and I have it copied and saved on a notepad document. It adds a step to every blog post because once I post, I have to click "edit" at the bottom and then "html" at the top before I add it. It is cool though and I do like it.

So make sure you thank Joanne not me :)

BTW: If anyone knows enough html to explain how to make my links clickable with this html code I would be forever thankful!

All the Best,
Renee Burrows

So Your Air Conditioner is Broke, It is Going to Take a Week to Get Fixed, How Will You Stay Cool in the Desert?

The best way to stay cool is to use evaporative cooling or a swamp coolers . Yup, you guessed it, ours broke down this past week! Luckily we have two A/C's but unluckily it was our sleeping quarter A/C's that broke down.

Many people told us about "Swamp Coolers" (Evaporative Coolers) in the past. Evaporative coolers are fans that blow out water. They work best in dryer climates with windows and doors open right in front of the unit so they can draw in the hot, dry (not moist or humid air. The best thing to do is run your evaporative cooler during the night, when it is cooler and then trap the moist cool air in the house. You can also add ice to most units to maximize the cooling effect. Evaporative cooling only lowers the temperature by 10-20 degrees depending on the unit, humidity and size of the area you are cooling. So it won't be as cold as A/C but it will make a difference.

You can buy portable units at large hardware stores like Home Depot & Lowes. Unfortunately, their units are not small portable units for the most part. You can buy smaller portable units at online specialty sites such as this. Unfortunately the portable units can only cool areas of only 200-400 square feet. Some of the smaller units are cheaper than ceiling fans so it wouldn't hurt to buy a couple to have them around and use them during the "less hot" summer months.

Evaporative Cooling units are a little less harsh on the environment because they use way less electricity, no freon or refrigerants. They do use a ton of water though. Ours chugs through about 5 gallons of water a day.

Conserving Water in the Desert: A Wise Thing to do with the Drought in Full Force!

The western drought has no end in sight and drought + watering restrictions are in full force. Several (about three) years ago our neighbors decided to not water their lawn anymore. Unfortunately our sprinklers are connected together so it became a battle to keep our lawn alive. We decided to throw the towel in this year, forget fighting the battle and convert from lawn to desert landscaping.

Rock and shrubs are boring so I wanted to do something different and I added a flower bed with drip irrigation on either side of the river + three med palms. I am so happy that I was able to keep a little bit of "Home" and "Color" in my front yard. Hardy annuals such as Vinca and Sweet Potato Vine do not take up much water!

Southern Nevada Water Authority offers rebates for converting grass to water smart landscaping plants. It is currently (6/24/2007) $2/square foot up to 1500 square feet. It takes an average of 55 gallons of water per square foot of lawn per year so you will save the environment and money too! Southern Nevada Water Authority also has a page with free landscape designs/ideas!

A little green awareness can go a long way and save you some green too!

Over the River & Through the Virgin River Gorge to Zion National Park We GO!

Zion National ParkSummer is my favorite time of the year and camping is my favorite outdoor activity. We usually make reservations with a group of 10-30 people so I was corrected just recently that we don't go camping but "isolated partying."

We spend about half our summer weekends running away to beauty that is not far away. Our favorite camp spot is at Zion National Park.

We stay in Springdale, UT which is right outside of Zion. It is a quaint town with hotels, campgrounds, beds and breakfasts, cottages, small shops and restaurants.

We stay at Zion Canyon Campground and RV Park right on the Virgin River. For those that don't enjoy camping as much they also have a hotel on site. This is one of the few areas that you can get OK cell service!

Since we mostly camp, we make our own food but on occasion we venture out to Zion Pizza & Noodle Co. The atmosphere, food and service is great!

With perfect driving conditions, Zion is only 2-2.5 hour drive from Las Vegas.

There is so much to do in Zion from Hiking, Visiting the Museum, Catching an IMAX Movie, Bicycling, Walking the Narrows and tubing the Virgin River.

Pets are not allowed in campgrounds unless you have an air conditioned RV.

If you need a quick weekend getaway from Sin City, I highly recommend Zion!

Monika gets the credit for the inspiration for this post!

Las Vegas Monthly Average Rental Rates SPIKE in May. Average Monthly Rental Rates Rise $667/Month!

Independence AstoriaAverage Monthly Rental Rates in the Las Vegas Valley have soared $667/month from April to May.

Average Monthly Rental Rates in April were $1537/month and average monthly rental rates in May were $2204/month.

Monthly rates are up a whopping $909/month since January.  Average Monthly Rental Rates in January were $1295/month.

The median monthly rental rate remained stable at $1295.

I actively work the rental market and started watching the stats as I watched inventory decline and prices rise in March.

I expected a slight rise from May but nothing of this nature.

Last Month's Report.

Next month I do expect a slight decrease in Average rates and an increase in median rates.

Many factors may be pushing rents up:

  • Fear of purchasing a house from a "declining market"
  • Steady Influx of New Residents
  • Solid Economic Conditions
  • Rise of Foreclosures forcing families to move out of their homes
  • Pool season
