marketing - making money

For many of us, we market ourselves in many ways to achieve a specific goal. That goal usually represents money.  What I am about to talk about is geared more towards loan officers in general.

More recently, I have seen more loan officers take on other roles in getting their name out there.  Some have been recognized by news agencies in which some of them have earned it. In my opinion, others have not earned the right to be called an expert in their so-called field.

I guess the question is, who are you really dealing with when someone has been appointed an "expert" by the media and their peers. Are you dealing with someone that is very knowledgeable, an expert in their field, or someone that knows how to market themselves and who can work the system.

I know this particular loan officer that has been getting recognized more and more both through the media and from specific mortgage groups. I read a few articles that he had posted and said to myself, these look familiar. So I e-mailed him about it and the long and short of it was that he bought the rights to those articles. And he doesn't have to let others know about this, because this is legal.  Secondly, some of the people or groups that have been recognizing him, actually know him well and or that he is a part of these groups.

Here is what someone stated to him when he was quoted in an AP article.

"Great job to _______________  a true marketing disciple for getting quoted in a associated press article today! This is a great example of builidng credibility, influence, and his personal brand!"

man behind a mask - real or fake

Building credibility?  How is that?  Okay, some of these media writers just search online for people to interview. But if you come across someone whose name is all over the internet, does this mean that they are a "true expert" in their industry?  Is one hiding behind other peoples ability to write good, quality posts, or the ability of putting out good information?  In many cases, you can tell if it's a copied article or their own material. But to the average borrower out there, can they tell this? But just because someone has been mentioned by a media source doesn't always mean that they are credible. Get to know that person, read other posts of theirs.  Just don't assume, this could be dangerous.

Keep in mind, "Marketing skills do not equal mortgage knowledge." - This has been stated by several people recently. And how one brands themself can be misleading on how good they actually are at their job.

To be or not to be an EXPERT, that is the question - Such as an FHA Expert

I guess Ken Cook and I are on the same page.  Read this good article by Ken.

Is your mortgage specialist really just a marketing specialist?
