The western drought has no end in sight and drought + watering restrictions are in full force. Several (about three) years ago our neighbors decided to not water their lawn anymore. Unfortunately our sprinklers are connected together so it became a battle to keep our lawn alive. We decided to throw the towel in this year, forget fighting the battle and convert from lawn to desert landscaping.
Rock and shrubs are boring so I wanted to do something different and I added a flower bed with drip irrigation on either side of the river + three med palms. I am so happy that I was able to keep a little bit of "Home" and "Color" in my front yard. Hardy annuals such as Vinca and Sweet Potato Vine do not take up much water!
Southern Nevada Water Authority offers rebates for converting grass to water smart landscaping plants. It is currently (6/24/2007) $2/square foot up to 1500 square feet. It takes an average of 55 gallons of water per square foot of lawn per year so you will save the environment and money too! Southern Nevada Water Authority also has a page with free landscape designs/ideas!
A little green awareness can go a long way and save you some green too!
