Nevada Real Estate >> Las Vegas Real Estate Specialist: Protecting Your Intellectual Property With Watermarks

Protecting Your Intellectual Property With Watermarks

Ann Cummings and Steve Scheer both stopped by my blog post about image theft and asked questions about image watermarking.

I decided to watermark my photos when some of my neighborhood localism posts pictures started turning up in the MLS. Just FYI, last I heard no watermarking Localism pics :)

The program I use is Batch Watermark Creator. On the website it is listed at $29.95 but I think I bought the professional version for $59.95.

I tried a bunch of freebies out prior to purchasing this one and you can try this out free by downloading it. They put a line through the picture until you purchase. You can modify your watermark to run through the entire picture, just be in a corner, be as light or as dark, as big or as small as you want etc etc etc. The beautiful thing is that you can do this in batches!

If you google "watermark," there are a bunch of programs to try for free. Be careful of viruses. I did find that this one was the easiest to use out of all of them that I tried.

If you have watermark programs you already use, share them here!

All the Best,
Renee Burrows

Does your MLS have any rules about watermarks? If they do, how can you get around them? My MLS won't allow any identity, but might allow some code or mark.

Jim:  I was thinking about making it super light with my initials running through it.  I have seen agent watermarked photos in the MLS.  Thanks for stopping by!

Great idea, at least it doesn't inhibit the picture that much - also can't believe you had to take those steps though! Come on peeps - no stealin' pictures!

Hey girl, first, great to see your smiling face here. I owe you a call I think  :)  Expect that call before the week's up. Secondly, thanks for sharing this. I've considered doing this also. I haven't seen much theft yet, but I'm sure I will soon and I'd rather nip it in the bud now. Have a great night, talk to ya soon. Oh, and GO BIG RED!

Huh, I need to check on my MLS now that I have seen that in one of your responses.

Renee, thanks for the info.  I've been adding my trademark with the free Photo-Filtre, which is a great photo editing tool by the way.  It is sad we have to take these steps but all too necessary.  I agree with Rayn...nice to see your pretty face up there!

Renee, Thank you!  I am not sure I am going to use in on my mls photos or not (I haven't had a problem there, yet anywhere) but I have other photos lifted.  I appreciate you sharing the info.

Thanks for the information. How do you get you signature to go on top of the other text, I can't seem to figure out how you do that. Thanks for sharing!

I have used U-Lead Photo Impact 10 (The latest version is 12) for watermarking photos. The loacal MLS does not allow anything one the pictures that will identify the listing agent.

As a photographer, I think it is important to protect your work!  Lately, I have been using PSP to add my signature. That of course can be cropped or clone brushed out.  The only thing I don't like about the watermark, is that it really takes away from the quality of my photos.  Kinda like peanut butter or potato chip grease on your homework assignment. LOL!  I guess it's a trade-off, I'll have to give this one some thought, but I like your post and therefore it gets a 5.  Thanks Renee! B-)

Very cool, Renee.  My pictures aren't good enough to have to bother with a watermark at this point, but someday...

Ah Renee - you are THE coolest!!  Thank you so much for this post!  I've asked several times on other posts in the past when watermarks were talked about and no one ever answered.  So thank YOU for not only writing a post on it but letting us know what your other experiences had been.

THANKS!!!

I haven't seen my photos "out there" yet.  But I guess it's just a matter of time.  I am sure I've had my localism pieces printed and sent to customers.  I should copy scape some of them.

Hey,

You have good advice, I tried your signature site, you had talked about a while back, I think I stayed on that site for over an hour...

Thanks,

Unfortunately the watermarking is distracting on images and really cannot be used effectively.  If the marking is prohibited by the MLS and Localism what good does it do?   The protected image sits on your computer and the unprotected version floats around cyberspace...
Posted by Dan Cummings - Connecticut's Running Realtor (Raveis Real Estate) almost 5 years ago

Renee - I have had some of my images stolen too, I am sure of it.  I have seen some that I put in localism, next thing you know they are on someones site as a virtual tour....

It's amazing to me really that people are too lazy to go get their own photos!

Kim:  I am with you, no stealin!  I can make it even lighter and naked to the eye.

Ryan:  I so look forward from hearing from you.  I hope all is well ;)

Susan:  See my response Kim.

Maggie:  Thank you for stopping by and your kind remarks and your watermarking suggestion

Steve:  Good luck with whatever you decide!

Brad Snyder:  Thanks for stopping by and you make it a great day!

Pam:  You have to put it at an angle, it was one of the middle steps, good luck!

Neetu:  Same here but you can put any text into it and lighten it.  Thanks for your suggestion!

Brad A:  I agree with you about quality.  I wish the MLS would add some noise to the pictures so when they are snagged it is easy to clarify who they belong to.  If only it were a perfect world!

Fran:  LOL!  They are still your intellectual property!

Ann:  You are most definitely welcome and I love it when you stop by.  You are one of AR's stars!

CEG:  You can set up a google alert also!

Jay:  No I haven't, tell me more!

Neal:  LOL!  Good luck!

Thomas:  I know, that site distracted me for the day too!

Dan:  You can make it slightly blurry or make the watermark so light that it is barely visible to the naked eye.  You don't have to put marks that identify you, perhaps just initials or something?!?!?  I am thinking about that!

Katrina:  I am amazed also!

Cyndee:  You are most definitely welcome!

Rey:  I only use the pro version because I use the photos in business.  I think that was the only diff

Sandi:  You are most definitely welcome!

Tony:  Good luck and thanks for stopping by!

Watermarking can be done in Photoshop easily just by adding whatever text you want on top of your image and then changing the opacity of the layer.  But as Renee mentioned in her post the programs you can buy let you do it in batches (total time saver).  Hope that answered your question a little bit.

Here is an example of one of my staging photos that I watermarked using Photoshop. I had my photos stolen several times and I got sick of dealing with it:living room staged by Moving Mountains Design

Michelle:  It is frustrating is it not?  You should put your domain in rather than your brand name.  That way you get more mileage when a thief uses your pics!

Renee! Interesting post about watermarking and an affordable utility. It does detract from the photo I think. I usually add my website url to my photos.  Not ideal but it discourages lazy "borrowing". Also, my Nikon D40 invisibily stamps my name ID on every photo when I take the photo, which is a great tool to have.  If there's ever a question, I can "read" the photo and know it's my work.

Posted by Judy Peterson (Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors Devon ) almost 4 years ago

Teri:  I have had photos stolen so I just like a little something to protect myself and prove it is mine!

Judy:Can it still read it even if you upload your photos to third party sites?
