Watch this 6 second garage break in

Using this method a thief can make it look as if you were never broken into. They can get in, take what they want and reset the latch when they close the door.

How many of you leave your car unlocked in the garage? How many of you have a garage that leads into your home?

A garage break in may be more than petty theft. It could be someone wanting to cause you physical harm or wanting to take a child.  It may sound extreme but if someone can get in to a home their reasons for doing so can be varied.

Next time you're in the market for a garage door get one without windows or at least spray window frost on them so a thief can't see the latch.  Most home improvement stores carry this in the paint section.

Lock the door from your garage that leads into your home.

Set your car alarm even though it is parked in the garage.

You can't really stop a motivated thief but you can seriously inconvenience them!

Nevin - this is a great video warning for us all.  I've reblogged it for my local readers.

Posted by Susan Emo in Gananoque/Kingston/Brockville ( RE/MAX Riverview Realty Ltd - Brokerage 1000 Islands Canada) almost 2 years ago

Susan - Thank you!  Amazing how easy it is to get into a garage isn't it?

Posted by Nevin Williams, San Diego's best mortgage pro! (First Priority Financial, San Diego jumbo & conventional ) almost 2 years ago

Nevin - this is terrific information. I suspect many folks don;t even think about this, especially the door leading from the garage into the house.

Thanks Nevin. This should bring awareness to everyone with glass windows in their garage doors. We need to be proactive against thiefs and thugs.

I hope the video doesn't get added to thieves tools & techniques! Let's hope it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. But nonetheless, a stern warning to all. Jane Pacheco

Jeff - Thanks!  I was blown away when I saw it

Wanda - I sure hope it helps.  Hey, how are you by the way?  I hope you're hanging in there

Drew - Personally I like vigilantism

Jane - I hear ya!  But it's out there on You Tube so what can you do?  Have great insurance!

Scary stuff.  Who knew? Apparently there are people who do and that's the problem.  Thanks for sharing the warning.

Nevin,

This is so scary I was thinking of re-blog it but since you post it to the public, I am really afraid of giving thieves any idea.... not that I think they need ideas.. They are who they are. I wish you had posted it as members only.

Thanks for the sharing

Nevin - Great information,  One can never be too careful. We do not have windows in our garage, we always lock the door from the garage to the house, but I have never set my car alarm...Good Idea.

Posted by Amy Hahn, REALTOR®, Crystal Coast, NC (Pine Knoll Shores Realty) almost 2 years ago

Nice, Nevin. Now you are freaking me out. When I get home, will my car be there? Will my house be there? I guess you can never be too careful!

Posted by Melissa Zavala Realtor® North San Diego County Homes (Broadpoint Properties) almost 2 years ago

Amy - Yes there are. Especially in tough economic times. Nice to know how so we can try ot make it more inconvenient for them

Esperanza - Actually I got this from a friend and it's on You Tube.  Most thieves probably already know this so I figured if the public knew they could take preventitive measures.

Amy - Considering you have the "big" things covered the car alarm and not leaving anything of value or with your personal info in the car is pretty easy to do!

Melissa - Sorry about that!  Now you can share this with people you know and hopefully they'll take measures to prevent it.

Nevin, I had to forward the link to my daughter - my mom already keeps her house locked up tighter than Fort Knox!  Thanks for the info, this was an eye opener.

Julia - That's what I said!

Mary - I'm glad it helped.  Amazing how clever thieves can be!

Can this be done so easily without the windows on the garage door?  (NOTE TO SELF: Do not buy a garage door with windows)

Posted by Carla Muss-Jacobs - Principal Broker/ Owner | Exclusive Buyers Agent | (503-810-7192 | BuyersAgentPortland.com) almost 2 years ago

Carla - I think many garages would be dark like a cave without windows unless they have a skylight (another entry point of course) so I guess if you can handle dark go with no windows or if you get windows then at least spray them with glass frost to make it a little more difficult for them to see.

Posted by Nevin Williams, San Diego's best mortgage pro! (First Priority Financial, San Diego jumbo & conventional ) almost 2 years ago

OMG!  I'm SHOCKED and horrified--showed this vid to my family and we will NOT be leaving our garage door unlocked EVER again!  Thanks for the info, Nevin!

This is unbelievable.  I have to re post it.

Posted by Virginia Tatseos (Stage-Show-Sell) almost 2 years ago

Thanks for the movie. I'm amazed at how we can make videos and post on YouTube for the world to see, that will teach us how to protect us, and at the same time teach would be thieves how to get into your house.

Posted by Bill Travis, Broker/Owner (Captain Bill Realty, LLC) almost 2 years ago

Nevin, this is one consumer alert that should be posted!  The fact that it is on YouTube shows that anyone can learn about how to do it and by reblogging it we are notifying our clients to protect themselves from this happening to them.  Thank you!    Susan

Posted by Palm Properties l La Jolla Real Estate almost 2 years ago

Debe - Surprise!  Easy as 1,2,3,4,5 and 6

Virginia - Thanks for the repost.  I hope people take it seriously

Val - I think the thieves have already know this stuff for years.  Now we get to see how they do it!

Susan - You are welcome!  I'm glad it is helpful to you and your clients.

I've seen your post through Virginia's re-blog and will re-blog locally. thanks for sharing. I am keeping my garage to the house door locked now.

UH WOW!  Another reminder is to take your garage door openers out of your cars if you keep them parked in the driveway :-/

You are making me glad I didn't upgrade my garage doors now!

I live in a fairly decent neighborhood and talk about tough times - I have walked out TWICE this year with my gas cap completely undone so someone has tried to steal gas from my car in broad daylight TWICE in the last year.  SICK!  Luckily my car has an anti syphoning valve
