With so many sports to chose from, which do you feel real estate reflects the most? Do you consider what you do at times as a team sport? Working as an individual? Always being pushed by your next competitor? Looking over your shoulder? Trying to be the best that you can be?
How about Golf, since it's not generally a team sport and one needs individual skill. Basketball, since it's a team sport. Tag team wrestling, so you are always tagging each other to help when needed.

Did you start at a young age, wanting to be a realtor? Did you learn from a mentor at a young and early age? What got you into real estate?
Do you feel yourself getting beat up often? Maybe more so because you are so passionate in what you do, that you take it personally and serious? Do you know when to have fun also?

Do you feel like at times that you are never moving forward? Can't get one foot in front of the other? Feel that rules and guidelines are too strict? Not strict at all? That you seem to be chasing technology because it moves to fast.
Do you feel that the media steps in at inappropriate times, giving the consumer a false hope, good or bad?
Sometimes making predictions that don't come true? Even your competitor that gives false hope to your potential client, just so they can get their business?
What about those around you in your profession that tell everyone that they are professional. Or possibly act as if they are professional. Do you see them patting themselves on the back for mediocrity in what they do in regards to work. Are you humble enough in what you do, that you just move onto the next client. Having referrals speak louder than words?

Are you the type that plays by the rules? Plays by your own rules? Treats others the way that you like to be treated.
You want to talk about being ethical, when nobody would have found out? David & Tonya Kucics wrote this post, Ethics, Real Estate and a PGA Tour Player. Kaye Thomas wrote about the same subject and it opens your eyes. The Right Way to Win....
How do you view yourself as a person? How do you view yourself as a professional? As professionals, we should take our job seriously. As PROFESSIONALS, we need to RAISE the bar & educate consumers.........
THE END RESULT..... after that week is done or the day is over..... do you feel like you are on top of the world?

I hadn't really thought of real estate in terms of a sports analogy before. It certainly is a very individual pursuit though. Perhaps a lot like Sumo wrestling.
Steroids......LMAO!!!! My goal is to be the best I can be. In this business you meet and are involved with so many different people, not just buyers and sellers, but loan officers, inspectors, appraisers, attorneys, etc. so I learned to adapt real well depending on the team I was on or the opponent(s) I was facing. The end result is always the same.....I do what's best for my buyer or seller, making THEM the winner...always.
Interesting blog Jeff. Thanks for posting and especially for the reminders about ethics. Love the graphics too!
from one Jeff to another...I think you wrote a great post here....I love what you have to say about Realtor ethics.
MALCOLM... . is it truly individual? Don't you have to rely on the appraiser? The loan officer? The title company doing their job? You know how many times I had to do the title companies job or the realtors? And I know many realtors had to do the job of the loan officer. As much as it seems to be an individual sport, I think it's a team sport... even though your company's name is different than mine.. just my opinion.. thanks
GINA... . sure, steroids... think about it.. some athletes use them to propell them to the top... imagine if this would help realtors? And yes, adapting with each person that is part of this business is a key. And as you stated, the end result, to treat everyone the same.. thanks
CAROL... . I think some forget about the ethics or the fine line.. that white line.. thanks
JEFFREY... . thank you very much for the kind words and for the compliment.
Good comparison Jeff reminds me of the old ABC Sports clip where Jim narrated the thrill of victory and agony of defeat--some days I get really beat up like that skiier they show tumbling down the hill into the fence LOL I get the wind knocked out of me at time or hit in the face by a ball I didn't see coming! I'm the cheerleader type and enjoy the victory cheer :)
Jeff, as always, a very good and motivational blog! More than ever, this business is a "TEAM SPORT", if the Realtor and Lender do not work together as a team, problems will happen!
Jeff, I think real estate is a team sport, even if we do it individually at times. It takes a team to get a property closed, and that includes all facets of the lending team, the buying and selling team, and the closing team. Very motivational post :)
Sharon
MARILYN... . I love the old ABC clips and that music.. I should go find it and add it to this post,... the agony of defeat... lol Thanks for mentioning this...
MARTI... thanks for featuring this in your group... again, thanks
JON.. . I agree and think many others would that real estate is a team sport, even though you are technically your own business in a way...and thanks for the polite compliment..
SHARON... . As I told Jon, many of us would agree that this business is a team sport. And I am glad that this was motivational.. thanks
Jeff,
I just love Rocky. The line from Rocky 6 speaks to me - "It ain't about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."
....isn't that the truth?
I love Chris Hooks reference! That is so true. I have always felt it was a lot like gymnastics. There must be extreme concentration, dedication, discipline from the individual agent. If all is done right in the sense of each of the "individuals" then eventually the "team" does come into play as well for a total score tally.
Here in NYC, it's a bit like MMA though!
To quote my guy Rex Ryan "Ground and Pound, gorund and pound baby!" lol
Hi Jeff: I love the sports analogy as all my life I played sports. So I view this business as a Team Sport as well.
But your analogy about the competition (lying, cheating, using steriods) is unfortunately all part of the game(business).
So i just make sure I play by the rules and be the best team player I can be!
Jeff- awesome blog and great analogy. Definitely a team sport. As a newbie in the real estate business I'd be lost without the support of my company (broker and fellow coworkers). They've all been great. Now that doesn't mean that I heed light to the fact that there is always someone else on the team ready and willing to step up and take my position away from me but to me, that's all part of the game!
